Thank you to everyone that joined us for Cyber Summit 2022!

For many of us, the internet has become a tool embedded in our lives, to the same extent as running water or electricity.

But over the past few years, many ethical questions have emerged about the uses of this tool. These include concerns about the online spread of fake or manipulated news, cybersecurity issues such as phishing attacks and data breaches, threats to net neutrality and access to internet infrastructure, and uncertainty about the future of open data and sharing research.

With these issues growing in relevance, what do government and academic leaders see as the priority for Canada’s internet? Should we police it more? Are we on the right track with the increasing use of Internet of Things technologies and machine learning? Have we gone too far — or not far enough — on the issue of privacy? Are Canadians more or less connected to each other?

At the 2022 Summit, we will look at the current state of the internet and discuss its benefits, where it falls short, what the future looks like, and can we fix the problems that exist?

Frances Haugen

Social media reform advocate

Born in Iowa City, Iowa, Frances is the daughter of two professors and grew up attending the Iowa caucuses with her parents, instilling a strong sense of pride in democracy and responsibility for civic participation.

Frances holds a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Olin College and an MBA from Harvard. She is a specialist in algorithmic product management, having worked on ranking algorithms at Google, Pinterest, Yelp and Facebook. She was recruited to Facebook to be the lead Product Manager on the Civic Misinformation team, which dealt with issues related to democracy and misinformation, and later also worked on counter-espionage.

During her time at Facebook, Frances became increasingly alarmed by the choices the company makes prioritizing their own profits over public safety and putting people's lives at risk. As a last resort and at great personal risk, Frances made the courageous decision to blow the whistle on Facebook.

Frances fundamentally believes that the problems we are facing today with social media are solvable. We can have social media that brings out the best in humanity.

Julia Cordray

Julia Cordray is a serial entrepreneur based out of Calgary, Alberta. In 2015, after announcing the pre-launch of a new social reputation app - Peeple - Cordray received significant media attention, leading to a severe backlash from the public. Before these issues became mainstream Cordray experienced forms of misinformation and online harassment, including death threats and personal data leaks. Cordray has many keen insights on the impact of online bullying and cancel culture, and what needs to be done to protect others from similar experiences.

Cordray also founded the recruitment agency Career Fox, which grew into the recruitment process consulting company 96 Talents. Julia created a proprietary recruitment process that leads to a 96% successful placement rate to help tech companies acquire talent globally.

She is currently working on the soon to be released PRDJY online learning and mentorship platform, which will provide children with the needed skills to be successful in a world increasingly run by robots and computers.
