The emergence of the web ~30 years ago led to the growth of a new cyber (internet) culture. This instant and global exchange of information drove subcultures that have spawned social movements, influenced elections, produced new economies, made people celebrities, as well as unfortunately, harbored nefarious activities.
With Cybera, SRNET and MRNet’s beginnings paralleling the rise of cyber culture in the early to mid-90s, the 2024 Cyber Summit looked back at the last three decades, and how cyber culture has influenced Western Canada’s network. It explored the ways people share and interact online, and how that has impacted research, cybersecurity, education, and the workforce. The Summit also looked to the next 30 years, with thought provoking predictions, suggestions for IT leaders to consider, and of course, lots of memes.
